William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

The authorship of the plays attributed to Shakespeare is disputed. The other leading candidates are:
Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (1550-1604)
William Stanley, 6th Earl of Derby (c. 1561-1642)
Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626)
Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)

There is a nice mini-biography of Shakespeare with some additional information at the
BuyCostumes Ideas Blog.
