Welcome to Great Books and Classics

"The student is half afraid to meet one of the great philosophers face to face. He feels himself inadequate and thinks he will not understand him. But if he only knew, the great man, just because of his greatness, is much more intelligible than his modern commentator. The simplest student will be able to understand, if not all, yet a very great deal of what Plato said; but hardly anyone can understand some modern books on Platonism." - C.S. Lewis, On the Reading of Old Books

Major Site Redesign - Phase II In Progress

The rollout of the final part of Phase II is underway! Authors and their works will be separated into distinct pages, and each page will be able to have multiple tabs for presenting information. I'm currently planning to use "Works" for a list of an author's works, "Links" for links to etexts and Amazon.com copies of a particular work, "About" for very brief biographical information or summaries of works, and "Resources" for online or for-sale study guides and other helps.

As of today (April 22, 2019), only Homer and the Iliad and Odyssey have been moved to the new format. I will be moving additional pages and works to the new format as I have time. Currently the old and new formats exist side-by-side, so the links in the index lists will take you to the format corresponding to the author or work selected (trying to make sure I could roll this out one author at a time while keeping everything accessible from any page has been a major reason why the process has taken so long).

New pages from this point forward will mostly just have Works or Links tabs populated; once I get all of the authors and works moved to the new format, I will start working on adding "About" information and resource links.
